Wellbeing

According to Psychology Today, wellbeing is a state one reaches when they experience health, happiness, and prosperity simultaneously. These three experiences can occur at different magnitudes and by different means depending on the person. Malcolm Gladwell in his 2004 TED Talk, “Choice, Happiness, and Spaghetti Sauce,” points out that experiencing happiness is not universal; each person reaches this level through different ways based on their tastes, preferences, and overall diversity. The way in which one experiences these three emotions may differ, but so long as there is as these emotions are present concurrently than one is in a state of wellness. William and Mary claims that there are eight dimensions of wellness: emotional, financial, environmental, intellectual, social, occupational, physical, and spiritual.  I believe that these can be boiled down to three main dimensions: social, mental, and physical. By reaching a feeling of content in each of these dimensions, one will reach a state of wellbeing.

The Social Dimension:

To satisfy our social needs, we must feel a connection to their environment and the people around us. Creating strong connections and setting down roots allows for a sense of belonging and comfort. In having this, one creates a support system that can help motivate him/herself to set goals and go after them.

Ways to do so:

  • Stop and have a conversation with your neighbors when you walk by
  • Grab dinner with coworkers after work
  • Attend a local event unique to your town – farmers market, festival, etc.

The Mental Dimension:

This dimension is strongly linked to being happy. Important aspects that play into mental health include spirituality, a sense of purpose, and a sense of self. Creating goals for yourself that are obtainable but make you feel proud and like you succeeded is also a great way to feel content about yourself and start to feel truly happy.

Ways to do so:

  • Meditate
  • Journal about your passions and plans
  • Incorporate daily reflection into your nightly routine

The Physical Dimension:

This pertains to staying healthy. Key aspects of one’s health include sleep, exercise, and proper nutrients. When one’s body feels great, they feel better too. Medical News Today claims that living a healthy life can improve mood and elevate one’s mood.

Ways to do so:

  • Yoga
  • Take a walk through a park
  • Cook your own meals every night

These are just the broad dimensions of wellbeing. Within each dimension, each person must figure out what makes them happy and healthy and prosperous. Wellbeing is overall content and pleasure with one’s life and the best way to achieve this is by being happy, healthy, and prosperous at the same time one.
